High Blood Pressure
Most people with high blood pressure feel completely fine. There is no pain, no obvious warning sign, and no moment when something noticeably changes. That is exactly what makes it so dangerous. While you are going about your daily life feeling perfectly normal, elevated blood pressure is quietly placing stress on the walls of your arteries, the muscle of your heart, your kidneys, and your brain. At Richmond Heart and Vascular Associates, managing high blood pressure is one of the most important things we do for our patients’ long-term health.
What High Blood Pressure Does to the Body
Blood pressure is a measurement of the force your blood exerts against artery walls with each heartbeat. When that force stays too high over time, it causes damage that accumulates gradually and invisibly. Artery walls thicken and stiffen, making the heart work harder to push blood through. The heart muscle itself can enlarge as a result of the extra workload. Kidneys, which rely on healthy blood vessels to filter waste, begin to lose function. Blood vessels in the brain become more vulnerable to rupture or blockage. None of this typically causes noticeable symptoms until the damage is far advanced, which is why regular monitoring matters even when you feel well.
In severe cases, very high blood pressure may cause headaches behind the eyes or visual disturbances. But more often, the absence of symptoms is the defining feature of the condition.
What Raises the Risk
No single factor causes high blood pressure, and some contributors are beyond anyone’s control. Age plays a role, as blood vessels naturally become less flexible over time. A family history of hypertension raises the odds that you will develop it as well. Excess body weight increases the demands placed on the circulatory system. A diet heavy in sodium causes the body to retain fluid, pushing pressure upward. Physical inactivity, chronic stress, and heavy alcohol use are also established contributors.

How We Evaluate It
Diagnosis requires more than a single reading. Blood pressure varies throughout the day depending on activity, stress, and dozens of other factors, so multiple readings over time give a more accurate picture than any one measurement. In some cases, we use remote blood pressure monitoring: a small device you wear at home that records readings at regular intervals throughout a full day and night. This approach reveals patterns that in-office readings can miss, including higher nighttime pressures and the effect of daily activity on blood pressure levels.

How We Treat It
Lifestyle Changes
Treatment almost always begins with lifestyle. Reducing sodium, reaching a healthier body weight, becoming more physically active, limiting alcohol, and quitting smoking can each bring blood pressure down meaningfully on their own. Combined, they can eliminate the need for medication in some patients.
Medications
When lifestyle changes are not enough, or when blood pressure is high enough to pose immediate risk, medication is added. There are several classes of blood pressure medication, each working through a different mechanism, and finding the right combination for a particular patient sometimes takes adjustment. Regular follow-up monitoring is essential to confirm that treatment is working and to make changes as needed.
